Inclined to luxury Yurts

Yurts or Gers are nomadic or permanent structures built and used extensively throughout Mongolia as homes and gathering places. In the rest of the World, there are many used as holiday homes, trail lodges as well as permanent homes. Here's one from the US

Traditional construction

The Mongolians use timber to make the trellis walls or Khana, the roof beams or Uni and the central ring or Tono. Often these are paintd and highly decorative. Ours are painted in orange with multi-coloured motifs. The walls are prevented from 'bursting' outwards under the pressure of the roof by a rope tied around like the hoop of a barrel. The covering is sheep felt and a canvas covering between this and the felt and a further cover outside to form a waterproof layer.

Guests houses are called 'konuk uy' and big, central meeting yurts-'chong uy'. Our guest houses are 20' or 6m diameter and the central Yurt 30' or 10m diameter.
